PROCEDURE WILL NOT BE PAID

Health & Medicine

My son has to have a procedure for progressive kerutconus (Corneal Collagen Cross Linking). The doctor told us that this procedure will not be covered by Discovery. We contacted them and they confirmed that although the procedure is not a cosmetic one, they will not pay because there might be a chance that my son will need a second procedure if necessary. He is now 16 and might need one in his 20's. The procedure will halt the deterioration of his cornea which is a plus for me.

This is not acceptable to me. No heart surgery, hernia operation or ANY OTHER procedure can be guaranteed not to be repeated or done as there is a chance that a second procedure might be needed. The procedure has been proven a success as it has been done for the last 15 years.

With Discovery not willing to cover the cost, we will need to pay almost R12 000.00 cash. My ex husband expects me to pay half of it though his income is much higher than mine (my son is on his medical aid) and I just cannot as single mother get R6 000 cash together, being registration time for studies, school fees and all other obligations I have. I am totally desperate.
