Dell Computers
Windows Vista installation consultation fee

Computers & Services

I bought a Dell Vostro 1520 laptop three years ago. The laptop came installed with Windows XP, but had a Vista Business installation disk in the box and a sticker on the bottom of the laptop with a Vista Business product key.

I recently reinstalled the operating system using the Vista Business disk. When I tried to authenticate the Windows Vista installation, I received an error message that stated that the product key I entered will not work with this installation of Windows Vista.

My husband called the call centre to resolve the issue, but after being transferred to several operators was told by the software call operator that we will have to pay for a telephonic consultation to resolve the issue because the warranty on the laptop has expired. So, even though the fault was with the issuing of the disk/product key when we bought it, Dell will not advise on how to resolve the issue unless we pay them.

I find this unacceptable as it is highly unlikely that this issue will be discovered within the warranty period and through conversation with the various operators it seems as though the issue is not uncommon.

I wish for the issue to be resolved without any additional fees.
