Harassment - for an "apparent" debt from 2004?

I left South Africa in 2002. I had a small balance on my Nedbank account, which I made payments to whilst living abroad via my mother. As far as I am concerned, my mother paid the account up to date and she never received any further letters, correspondence from Nedbank following this time. She lived at the same address and even took over my cell phone at the time. I moved back to SA in August 2011 and started being harassed by Nedbank in 2012 demanding this apparent debt? This is the first we have heard about any existing debt since 2004? I have received legal advice, where I have been told that this is not legal and this apparent debt is prescribed. However, your retails recovery department is having none of it, saying I need to get an attorneys letter claiming prescription. From what I understand, I can do this myself?! Why am I being ill advised? Please can this get sorted once and for all and please can you have my name removed from all records associated to this account. Many Thanks.
