Misplaced photo id@check in costs me R3500

As a loyal Kulula passenger, I would like to express my sheer disappointment at the treatment meted out to me, both at Lanseria airport, and subsequently on the phone with the contact centre.
I will describe the situation in brief, and would appreciate a response.
We arrived (myself, my wife and our 7 month old infant) at Lanseria in advance of our 7.55am flight to Cape Town on 23 December. At check-in, my wife has photo id, my baby's passport was also in our possession, and I had unfortunately by mistake misplaced mine (it transpired it was at home by my bedside). I had plenty of credit cards in my name in my wallet, together with my Discovery medical card for emergencies - with my name, id number, wife and baby's details too (as they are dependants), but to no avail - the management would under no circumstances let me on the plane without photo identification. I rushed to the desk to see whether they could accommodate us on a later flight (and I would rush home to collect id - a 50 minute drive home to Glenhazel) and return to depart on a later flight. Friends were prepared to go to my flat and collect the id, and bring it through if we could be accommodated on a later flight. Th
