Contacr phone in repairs for 6 months

I purchased a HTC phone on contact basis and within less than 1 month I encountered major problems, took phone back and MTN sent the phone for repairs. I was notified by MTN within 3 weeks phone has been fixed but within 2 days I encountered existing problems and took the phone back to them again. Again MTN sent the phone back to repairs and it has been in repairs for 6 months and I continued paying the contract. During that time no courtesy phone has been given and I repetitively attempted to contact them requiring about my phone and they could never give me the appropriate feedback. Their excuses were that phone was at different locations e.g. HTC company then branch, the repairs. I then decided to go into branch to inform them I wanted to cancel because I was not satisfied with service and only to find out the phone was at the branch and they didn't notify me and I had to pay the month instalment. They informed me that I must pay a cancellation fee but I refused to because I barley had that phone in my possession but I had to pay every month. I am receiving letters from lawyers and MTN is sending my boss sms's humiliating for something they were at fault with.
