MTN Rip Off Roaming Charges

Telecommunications

I have been an MTN contract holder for some 15 years with 3 lines on my contract. Recently my husband went to Namibia and used some 400MB of data on one of these lines whilst on roaming. The first indication of the amount that MTN charge for this service was when my account was suspended. Then a bill for some R40k was received, implying that MTN are charging some R100 per MB, a figure substantiated by other comments on hellopeter. All three of the lines have previously and frequently been used on roaming in Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, so MTN are aware that this service is required. My questions are: a) Why does MTN not warn its subscribers about their outrageous charges for data roaming? b) Why are these charges 500 TIMES what local data charges are? - I could understand if it was 10 times or even 100 times higher, but 500 TIMES HIGHER IS A COMPLETE RIP-OFF! c) Does the Consumer Protection Act not prohibit outrageous charges of this nature? I also fight continually with MTN about overcharges for Blackberry services and insurance on my account, all of which were cancelled over a year ago. And I supposed they will wonder why, if I don't renew my contract! Mrs J W Cuffley
