Cancellation of contract or at least i assumed so!

I called through to the call centre in December 2012 to advise I would like to cancel my contract which ended on the 09/02/2013, they advised I cannot cancell telephonically I had to send a letter or email as it had to be in writing. I then sent an email to which I received a ref no confirming receipt of my email. I left it understanding my request had been received & assumed it would be actioned as previously advised ot had to be in writing, I checked my cell phone on the 09th Feb 2013 & realised my contract was still active & then called the call centre again to check why & they advised me that no cancellation was received from my side & they cannot do much as the cancellation department only works office hours & they would get back to me after 72 working hours, I called this morning to follow up & was advised my cancellation was indeed actually received however they could not get hold of me because i was on holiday, which i find strange because my voicemail stated when i am back & alternative contact numbers, also as stated previously all they needed to cancel was something in writing which i did so why was this not done. I will not be paying additional charges!!!
