MTN is ripping me off

I had a contract with MTN that was suppose to expire in September 2013, but yet they still deducted my money in October and it was way too much than my monthly contract subscription. when i called their customer service to enquire about this, they told me that i should have called them to cancell the contract. why must i cancell the contract that i know its for only 24months and will expire in September?
well i didnt know that, and the date was 1 November when i called them and still had airtime on that phone, so they advise that i must finish the airtime 1st, then call and cancell after finishing airtime as i will forfeit it if its not finish before cancelling the contract. Yesterday, 13th November, the cellphone was, im calling them today to cancell as i called them when it was to blacklist it, they told me that i will still be billed for a full month, how on earth is that possible? i really dont want anything to do with MTN in future, they on customer service and they are a very greedy company...
