MTN not able to call customer with update

Have a brand new Nokia E5 mobile phone, still in box unused with all protective stickers on. MTN dealer did say phone is still covered by 24month warranty. The phone did not want to switch on so I purchased a new battery. Phone still did not switch on. Took it back to the dealer to be sent for repair. Week later the phone returned "repaired". Back home the phone still did not switch on. Back to the dealer they contacted the repairs department at Mtn to be advise the phone is out of warranty. Why could Mtn not phone me to say the phone is out of warrant (which may be disputed) or give the cost for repairs (brand new phone-ok, old but not used) instead to keep quiet and send me around the bush with a phone not even looked at. Is it not my informed choice to chose if it need to be repaired or for Mtn to phone me with comments or problems etc? Is this normal dealing to keep the customer completely in the dark under false pretence? Is this standard service from Nokia and Mtn??? Has Nokia and Mtn fallen completely from grace??? Zero aftercare or after sale service!!
