Why is your ID number required for general calls?

Hi, not really a complaint just a question.

I wanted to know if it was normal procedure for call centre agents to ask for your ID number when you call MTNSP and for welcome calls? Its just a bit concerning because its not very comfortable to reveal your ID number especially over the phone as it is very easy to learn a script and appear to sound like you come from a certain company
