83% increase in Vitality gym fees in 2014???

I am a member at Virgin Alice Lane. Have been a classic member for about 3 years now and a Virgin member since 2007. I am currently paying R437.50 per month for the Classic membership which we were told would increase to R525 when Alice Lane opened (this change has not yet occurred but then I was also offered a free month in September for which I was charged so...). However i'm shocked to find out next year the premiums increase to R800 per month - thats 83% increase. The Virgin callcentre said this was due to "all the Classic clubs being upgraded". Why are longstanding loyal members being asked to fork out for maintenance improvements which should have been part of your long-term budgets? This really is bizarre business behaviour and my husband and I will cancel our membership if this is true, and not a silly error.
