Returning Goods

A pair of purple Nike Sneakers were bought for me on the 5th of March. They were given to me as a birthday present on wednesday the 6th of March but the person bought a big size. I returned the shoes to the store on the 10th of March and was told that I couldnt change them because, i didnt have a receipt with me and that i had already fitted he shoes. Yes the bottoms are white and after fitting they were gonna have dust particles. I am not asking for a refund, all i want is a smaller size. I am not happy that the guy even confirmed that the shoes were bought from their store but couldnt exchange from them without a receipt. This is the most lame excuse ive ever heard. Am I supposed to wash the bottoms and pretend that i never fitted the shoes? I dont see myself buying from that store EVER!
