My card was swiped twice

I paid for my purchases via card at the above store. The cashier swiped my card and removed the card from the machine before the transaction was complete. I then received an SMS. It was the confirmation SMS that I received from the bank saying that the purchase had gone through. I showed it to her and she said that my card had been declined. I told her it is because she removed my card from the machine before the transaction had been complete. she then called her manager and he said that my card had to be swiped again. i told him that i was not comfortable with that, and didnt see why me as the customer had to pay for the teller's mishap, but he said that it would be reversed, and i will receive an SMS shortly. I told him that we will have to wait for it to be reversed before i paid again. He said that if it goes through twice then he would refund me next week, after i check my bank statement. After some disagreements I just let them swipe my card, as i was on lunch and needed to get back to work. When I got home I checked my statement and saw that the amount was indeed deducted twice as I initially anticipated. Why was this not confirmed before I left the store?
