Gas heater that died after -70 hours of use

Shops, Products, Services

On 14 June 2010 I purchased an Alva gas heater GH31 from Game in Cresta. It was used moderately in the winters of 2010, 2011 and 2012. When the cold snap finally hit in 2013 on 6 July 2013, I switched it on. All seemed ok until I tried to change the setting from 1 panel to 2. The switch stuck completely, and to switch it off I had to disconnect the gas. It now won't do anything (a brand new bottle of gas, so it's not that), and the switch barely refuses to work. I phoned Alva Marketing to inquire where I could purchase a replacement part, and was told that my only option was to take the heater to Midrand, and let a technician assess it for R350, with further costs obviously to follow. Mathematically and far less stressful, it seems to me that my best option is to purchase a new gas heater - not an Alva! - as the after sales service is extremely poor from my perspective. My biggest irritation is the sheer waste of what is truthfully a nearly-new item, with very little choice offered to reuse the item.
