Manager says I tampered - changed plug

I wish to complain of an incident I had at Checkers/Hyper today which has left a bitter sweet taste in my mouth. I had purchased a SCE 2000W heater fan @ R129.99 last week and on Friday the 10th May 2013 it got a bit cold in Johannesburg so I had decided to use it. It had one of those round two pin plugs and it was after shopping hours and I was desperate, so I could not buy a special adaptor to test the heater. I had decided to replace the plug with a three pin plug (big mistake) to check if the heater is working. When I gently turned the control knob to heat, the control knob broke off. This morning I brought the heater in for repairs at Customer Services and was told to get another one. The lady at customer services noticed that the plug was changed and told me she cannot exchange it. After waiting for the branch manager for a considerable time (he is always having a smoke in the car park) he told me that I had TAMPERED with the heater (by changing the plug) and that he cannot exchange it. Firstly, nowhere on the receipt or user's manual it states that changing a plug will forfeit the guarantee of the product and I wasn't aware of it. I told him the damaged heater is of no us
