I joined Oxygen, now called Medshield, in Feb 2004 to cover my eldest & I, & in 2008 added my youngest. Yesterday we called Medshield to get hospital authorization for my youngest, who frequently has tonsillitis, throat infections and snores terribly due to the narrowing of the airway. An Ear Nose Throat Specialist has advised us to remove the tonsils & adenoids tomorrow. After receiving no authorisation number via sms, despite being told we would, I called again today to be informed that my hospital plan only covers 22 or 24 possible problems ALL ONLY CONDITIONS RESULTING IN DEATH. Lack of transparency regarding policy & benefit changes (no correspondence received except claims and concerning mismanagement), lack of follow-up of client calls, & lack of client needs assessment & monitoring (surely someone noticed all the thousands of Rands worth of rejected and thus out-of-pocket costs) make Medshield an absolute disappointment! I shudder to think how many thousands of clients are being fooled. I have already received my termination form... after paying 8 yrs for a death policy disguised as a hospital plan.
