Left in the dark now I'm liable for account

My wife was admitted into hospital in May 2013 for a chest infection, she underwent various tests including a gastro-intestinal endoscope. Thinking that everything was taken care of we carried on with our lives. Until in June I received a bill from the anesthetist who was involved with the gastro-intestinal endoscope. After several phone calls & visits to the hospital I was finally told that the anesthetist is not covered by the medical aid scheme & that I had to settle the bill myself. However I was not informed of this by the hospital or the medical aid that the anesthetist is not covered. I informed the medical aid that I'm unaware of such stipulation as I scrutinized their sales brochure & simply can not find it (several Phone calls). This issue is now a hot potato as everybody is blaming each other & the issue is not being resolved. Meanwhile the anesthetist is threatening me with legal action. Please help
