Lack of Transparency in Excess Mileage Paperwork

I recently had the unfortunate experience of hiring a vehicle through Woodford Car Hire. There is a limited mileage policy on their rentals and on departure we were given a mileage statement which reflected the incorrect outgoing mileage (unbeknownst to us). On the return of our rental we were told, without apology, that this statement was incorrect and their "system" actually reflected a different mileage resulting in us owing in excess of R1000.
I feel that this mileage "on the system" could have been anything and as a customer I have no way of checking this is true. When I raised the complaint with the management, they said I was just trying to get out of paying the excess mileage.

Clearly I cannot get out of paying when they have my credit card details which will be efficiently debited no doubt by the same inefficient staff who did not offer an apology or bother to ensure the correct mileage was on my paperwork.

Also beware the drop off procedures are not nearly as efficient as the other major rental companies: you cant just stop and drop the keys and run to your flight, you have to que up in the rental office and onerously go through all the departure paperwork
