How can a bank give me money I don't have

I had a cheque acct with nedbank that was supposed to be closed however is not and im told I owe money's. How is it that I had no overdraft facility but even without having funds I could draw R1500 . This is the most ridiculous thing ever and I will no be liable for any payment. Nedbank can get lost.
