I have been with Santam Insurance for the last 5 and a half years and has paid my premium every month. I have had only 3 small claims in this period, i.e. two in 2009 (windscreen and rear window) and one in 2010 (laptop). About two weeks ago I had a freak accident at my house. I was outside in the garage and the wind blew the front door closed and the latch of the lock jammed. I couldn't open the door. I couldn't phone anybody as my cell phone was inside the house. The only option at that time was that I had to break the door to get inside the house. I did report the incident to the police. I submitted a claim for the replacement of the door to Santam. A consultant phone me and said that the claim was declined because it is not part of my house contents. Only items that belong to me is covered under house contents and the front door doesn't belong to me, as it is part of the structure. According to him I must go to my landlord and he must claim from his insurance. This is how far Santam will go for you when you have an emergency. For me this is unacceptable. I think I am a good customer of Santam. They get my money every month but when I have a crisis, they cannot help me.
