Failure to remove a paid debt from my credit

I had a bad credit history because of an account i did not know about, i went to transunion and they had given me the details of the frim it had been handed over to. I was given a settlement figure and paid it that same week. This was last year, it is now 2013 and it still hasnt been removed from the credit report and its making my name bad, im trying to finance a new vehicle but because o this unresolved matter, im not able to. I have emailed the email address that i was given, with all my details but i get no response.
