Standard Bank
Poor Treatment of Custome

Business & Finance

I am a full-time student at the university of Pretoria. As a full-time student, my income fluctuates from month to month, as I have no permanent employment. I have a "student achiever" account with Standard Bank, because it seemed like a logical account to have for someone who studies full-time, and only works in the holidays.

Several weeks ago I received a letter in the post informing me that because I am over the age of 23, I no longer qualify for a student achiever bank account, however at an amount of R59 a month, I may continue using it. This amount I still cannot find anywhere advertised on your website, which means it is either very well hidden, or it has never been published on your website. I always use more than 5 card transactions a month, so that is another R25 a month. I am charged more to get airtime, withdraw money, debit orders etc.

I went to Hatfield branch to enquire about changing my account. The enquiries lady suggested the "Elite" account. When I applied, I was told rather rudely that I do not earn enough to qualify. On the other hand I am being told that I am too old for your student account, and the charges cost more than what the "Elite" account would.
