Scary service from old mutual

I have a life policy with old mutual greenlight, i took this policy out in 2008 and the premiums is paid via salary deduction. Today i received an sms saying that i have a refund due to me, surprised, i called the number and was ad viced that my policy had lapsed and that the premiums that were deducted was to be refunded, i stunned to hear this, asked why, the agent explained that i had missed a premium in April and thats the reason why my policy had lapsed. At this stage i am thinking really, i have been paying you guys religiously and without any consultation you guys just cancel the policy and even though you still receiving premiums you would not even call and find out what is happening, i mean how much monies have i not already put into this insurance, i then called my HR just to find out that he next month i was double deducted and the policy should still be up to date. Now this is the scary part what if i had an accident last month old mutual would have said they cannot pay out because the policy had lapsed this is really scary.
The lady told me that old mutual did send a letter really with our post service thats so reliable???
