Credit Card didn't work overseas

On or about 14th August 2013 I called the call centre at the credit card division at Absa to inform them that I would be in Mauritius from 19th August 2013 to 24th August 2013 and would be using my credit card. On arrival in Mauritius on the afternoon of the 19th August 2013, I went to an ATM (Barclays) to withdraw cash. The ATM recognised my card but would not allow me to draw any money!!! I had to make do with the limited SA rands that I had taken with me - so disappointing.
