Can't cancel credit card in the bank

I suddenly received a credit card statement last week showing bank charges for August 2013. I was however under the impression that the account was closed after I cut up my card and transferred all my money from this account in September 2012. I haven't received any statements from October 2012 until now. When I went to the bank branch on Saturday I was informed that you can't even close a credit card account in a branch, you have to phone the credit card division. When I phoned the credit card division I needed the account no and expiry date of my card - which I didn't have since I don't have a card. An ABSA employee assisted me to phone the credit card division, who then couldn't assist me since the credit card closure division doesn't work over weekends. I now have to phone them during the week from an ABSA branch, get the amount that I have to pay from them (as the bank charges have now already doubled and there are bank charges when you close the account), pay the money at a teller and then phone them again to close the account. This whole process is quite ridiculous!
