Simple mistake too costly and rediculous

My mother went to book tickets online for a local flight and by mistake put our surname for a friend of hers so the surname on the booking for her friend was wrong and thus the ticket becomes invalid. the mistake was noticed after the payment had been made, and after calling them and asking how this simple probably common or easy mistake to make cannot be rectified they told us it could not be changed and we had to pay for the ticket for the ticket and get another ticket so that they copuld both go on the flight so paying for 3 tickets instead of two. a simple mistake costing R 1500 or so which is rediculous because it is a simple fix.
