On 13th July 2013 my nephew (aged 15), boarded a Greyhound bus in Johannesburg. He was travelling to Empangeni. After leaving Vryheid the bus broke down. The passengers were not given concise information as to what time they would depart again. After many hours of being stranded between Vryheid and Empangeni, an Ikhwezi bus finally arrived to transport the passengers to Empangeni and Richards Bay.By this time my nephew was in distress as his mobile phone was almost flat and we could not communicate with him. It was also night time by now. The situation got even worse as the Ikhwezi bus driver did not stop at the designated stop in Empangeni. My nephew is not familiar with the area at all and did not know he was meant to disembark from the bus at a random spot chosen by the Ikhwezi bus driver. The driver then proceeded to Richards Bay..It was also almost 11pm by now. We had to call on an old schoolmate living in Richards Bay to meet my nephew. I don't even want to imagine what would have happened to my nephew had he been dropped off at 11pm alone in Richards bay. I am horrified by the experience. Greyhound also ask for alternate contact numbers but we never heard from them.
