Money Making regarding Weight on Group bookings

Traveling & Tourism

Our group of computer gamers flew up to Johannesburg for the rAge expo this weekend. We made a group booking 7 on the way up and 9 2 on the way back.

On checking in at Cape Town International we were aware that Kulula charges extra if you bags are overweight. Our players had computers that weighed 24-26 kg's. The limit is 20 kg. Not everyone in the group had a computer or lot of luggage. Our accumulative weight was under the limit so the man allowed us to travel without the charge. It seemed logical.

On return to Cape Town we checked in at Lanseria with a larger group. The man there explained that we had to pay extra was it was over the limit. We discussed and explained how as a group, our weight was under the limit. He said he understood but he cannot allow it. We explained that they allowed it at Cape Town but he said "kulula will come down on us". He then referred us to the manager who gave us the same story. As a group we paid R750 extra (they knocked one of the R250's off).

Their policy states that even if you are 1 kg over the limit you have to pay a flat rate of R250. With Mango they charge per kilogram which makes sense.

It is a clear money making scheme.
