Iphone not functional

Iphone decided to start malfunctioning obviously something wrong with internal audio card or mic and device is in its 20 month of 24 month contract. I sent it in for repair and only after numerous calls I find out I can collect my phone but... it is beyond economic repair and that was the end of the conversation... pay for a contract and device that does not work!!!
27 calls later and final getting the no of Mo Bergman who is area manager we find out she is on holiday (why would you give out a no of someone who is not available? They then give me her bosses no and although he should be on duty he refuses to answer any of his phones for more then 15 minutes.
Net result I have a contract and a phone I must pay for even though I do not have a working phone that I can use? Are these folks completely mental? In the interim I have had to borrow a phone.
