Forced to pay an extra month AFTER contact expires

My Vodacom cellphone contract expires on 4th April 2013. I have given them more than a months notice to cancel the contract and have been told that because the system issues the free airtime etc, on the 4th, I have to pay for an extra month or pay a precancellation fee. As far as I am concered the contract expires on the 4th and I should be able to cancel on that day! Refusing to allow me to do this is llegal and downright!! Its disgusting the way they try to manipulate the facts to make money.
