Cancelling a contract is impossible

My contract expires tomorrow 18/07/2013. I phoned at the end of June to give 30 days notice to cancel the contract, but they couldn't cancel it then because my contract runs from the 18th to the 17th of each month and that then wouldnt be 30 days notice. I was told I must phone on the day the contract expires to swith if over to pay as you go. (can also not cancel it completely... they gave me a long story). But I though I might not get a chance tomorrow, so I will phone now to change it over to pay as you go I phoned today and was told, they can't do it today I have to phone on the 19th (a day after the contract expired). And I only have that ONE day to call, or the contract will be renewed. NOW THAT IS LUDECROUS. All I want is my contract to be changed over to Pay as you go. Select the suitable date from which it should be done. But dont expect me to phone you exactly on that day and not a day before or after??? Is it even possible to cancel a contract or am I just given excuse after excuse? Please help.
