My wife and I live in Randburg, and were visiting her parents who live in Port Elizabeth over the December holiday period. My wife was due for an upgrade, so we went to the Vodashop in Summerstrand on Friday the 3rd of January to have it done. The staff were very helpful and successfully processed the upgrade.

The phone (Samsung Galaxy S4) however, had multiple faults out of box, including a broken gyroscope (component that controls screen rotation, etc.)

When my wife returned the faulty phone the next morning, she was told by the suddenly very unfriendly staff to "go do a software upgrade and then come back".

This is completely ridiculous and unacceptable. My wife returned from the Summerstrand mall in tears. We connected the phone to her father's wifi and did the 735mb software upgrade, to no effect. We had to travel back to Jo'burg the next morning and thus had no chance to return the phone a second time.

Is it Vodacom policy to send a loyal customer away to go do a software upgrade at their own expense on an out-of-box faulty cell phone?

I have been a Vodacom subscriber for 15 years myself and I am extremely disappointed with how the situation was handled...
