Cell C failed to cancel contract timeously

I was informed by the call centre to send a cancellation letter on the 23rd month to cancel the 24th month contract.
After the 24 months I was still being billed. On contacting Cell C call Centre, I was told my fax was not received. I then sent the same fax a further 3 times and was still told that it was not received. Frustrated I put a stop at my bank as Cell C would not cancel my contact. That was in 2005. Contract expired on 06.09.2005.
Now in 2013 when I want a new contact I am told that I have a flag on my account due to non payment. They want me to pay for month 25 and 26.
If Cell C could not cancel a contact as requested timeously because their infrastructure and staff were inadequate, why should the customer be made to pay for their shortcomings?

I have a copy of the original fax and fax confirmation sent on 29.07.2005.
