Want to bill me for an account that's expired

My 24month contract expired in October 2013. On the 26th November I received a call from Sandy to advise me that I'm in arreas with my contract!!! When I took the phone I was not advised that I needed to notify Altech to cancell my contract when it expired to my shock and utter disgust I was told that I was supposed to have called in October to cancel. When one takes out a contract for a certain period it should be exactly that period- Am I imagining things or is that how things should be? Somebody please help! Apparently I'm in arreas amounting to R294 which I'm not prepared to pay. Had I been advised that I had to call in to cancel the contract I would gladly pay. I'm extremely dissapointed in the way I've been treated with regards to this issue, Sandy was not forthcoming and helpful when she called me so can somebody please assist me in getting to the bottom of this!!!
