Contract over, forced to continue for another month

I had a 2 year contract with Altech Autopage Cellular which expired on the 18th September 2013. I payed the September bill the end of September 2013 as normal when it arrived.
When I contacted them to check that the contract was over & inform them I no longer wished to continue or renew it, I was informed that because i did not contact them in time i would have to ontinue with the contract until the end of October 2013, thereby continueing to pay for something I no longer want. I was never informed that when the contract expired I woud have to cancel in time or else the contract would continue but on a monh to month basis. I requested it be cancelled immediately but was rejected flat out & informed the contract would only be cancelled on the 28th October 2013, and that I would have to pay the bill for that month. What kind of service is this? I was promptly contacted when my payment was late, but could not be contacted to inform me my cotract was over and what did I want to do further. I want someone to sort this out and close this contract immediately. I am being forced to coninue with something I do not want or requested. This is shocking and I am being taking advantage of.
