Lost thousands on out-of-bundle data

I applied for a new contract at Chatz Connect Jakaranda Centre in August 2012. I specifically asked for 500MB of monthly data but when I got my first bill I noticed that no data was activated so I went back to the store and asked them to activate it, explaining the whole problem. They added the data and I thought great, sorted... now a year later I move to Cape Town where I don't have a wireless network setup yet. After the first month I get a bill for R2500 for out-of-bundle data and I thought but how can this be? Upon investigation I am told that there are no data associated with my account, and that the person who activated the data at the store only did so for a single month after which the data expired and I have been paying out-of-bundle rates for every MB since! I have in the meanwhile sent the request to activate the data and put a cap on the account not to incur any further losses. I asked for a copy of the initial contract which I received now, but there are no indication of any data bundles, even though I asked for it... I feel that the store did not do their job properly and I have unknowingly been paying thousands of rands over the last year for their stupidity.
