Handed over because MTN never contacted me

Had a contract for 23 months for an iPad with MTN, which i am also trying to cancel now. Never had a problem with payment as payment was via a debit order off my credit card. However, MTN stopped debiting my credit card around June/July this year, and blamed it on my credit card changing which is amazing since my credit card changed in March 2013. No-one contacted me other than smsing the simcard in my iPad which of course I did not receive. The first communication i get from MTN regarding the lack of payment is when i am handed over to lawyers, who i now owe R2000 extra because MTN could not be bothered with contacting me directly, even though they have my details when i took out a contract with them. I have paid MTN what i owe them, but cannot understand why i was not contacted before i was handed over??? Why should i pay legal fee for your department not even trying to contact me?
