Mtn
Products unavailable / False advertising

Telecommunications

On Sunday, 27 January 2013 we went to your Sandton City branch to upgrade two cell phone contracts. When we arrived we looked at the phones on display to decide which phones we wanted, assuming that products on display would be readily available. When we reached the front of the lengthy queue we were told that neither of the phones were in stock.

We were told that the one phone, the HTC One X which was on display on the Anytime 200 package for R349pm, hadn't been in stock for at least four months! Yet the branch continued to advertise it and keep it on display. This phone was the reason we went to the Sandton City branch since it is much further than our closest MTN store.

The other phone was the Samsung Galaxy S2, a phone on special this month in the MTN brochure on the Anytime 100 package for R189pm. Again we were told that the phone was unavailable. Apparently this was due to the phone being discontinued. This phone is on display in every MTN store in our area yet is not available!

The sales consultant took my details and I have yet to hear back from him. I find it hard to believe how MTN can falsely advertise these products in contravention of the Consumer Protection Act.
