Laptop/Dat? a usage billing complaint

I recently purchased a Compaq laptop and 500mb data connection from MTN in July. After receiving an excessively high monthly invoice (Over R1000 on a 500mb data contract) from MTN I called the "808" helpdesk and was informed by the helpdesk agent that I was penalised for not having data bundles loaded onto my account. This after loading data bundles through the MTN software installed on the laptop.

The only way to monitor data usage is by manually clicking on the data usage button within the MTN software. Often the antiquated manual "balance check" via the MTN laptop software cannot connect with the MTN servers to check available data and give the consumer a real-time update of expenditure.
Why does MTN not provide a "splash-page" website, as Vodacom does, thereby warning the consumer the data bundle is running low.

The current software system restricts the consumer to using data unknowingly at MTN's higher data rate and I believe this to be an infringement of consumer rights. MTN has made no apparent effort to provide an effective way for the customer to manage and account for data purchases made.

My emails to the MTN customercare email address go unanswered..
