VODACOM CONTRACT NUMBER

I have been a Vodacom Subscriber for as many years as they have been in business in South Africa. I have renewed my contract with them on numerous occasions so I was shock to hear that my number is being used by another person? How on earth does somebody else suddenly take my number when I have been using this very same number for so many years under contract?
