Phone not so waterproof as advertised

I bought my son the Sony Xperia Z. I did it because it is claimed to be "IP57 certified - dust and water resistant - Water resistant up to 1 meter and 30 minutes". So he put it in water. Less than 1 m, and less than 30 minutes. But somehow the phone got wet inside and stopped working.

So I contacted MTN who passed me on to Sony. I spent more than 3 hours arguing my case with them, but they refuse to agree that the phone behaved outside the guaranteed specifications.

I feel that the phone was actively advertised as being water resistant, and the specification above are not disputed by Sony. But they still refuse any form of compensation.
