Dischem refusing to refund us

I bought a Respisense for my premature baby on Sunday last week at Woodmead Dischem immediately when our baby was discharged from Netcare Waterfall in Midrand. When we got home we realised that we have a wrong respisensor (respiratory monitor). We tried to return it to Dischem Westgate where the supervisor said she can take it back on condition she gives us a voucher not the money. When I asked her why she said she will speak to the manager. She came back and said they won't take it because the box is damaged. I don't know what she meant because the only way to open the box was to tear the label on it.

So what must I do as I don't need it anymore. My baby is too tiny for it to sense if she is breathing or not. The return policy states clearly that we can return it as it does not fall under personal products or assembled products or medication!!

This is daylight. Why was she willing to allow us to return it provided we accept a voucher not our money?? Why does dischem package things and seal them in a way that when you open it the seal will be removed and later refuse refunds based on their packaging?
