Is this really customer service?

I always buy at this store... love the shoes!!!
I was at the store on Saturday 07/09/13 and wanted to buy a shoe that was on sale... The price clearly stated that on the shoe. When I get to the till to pay for it the consultant and as well as the manager tells me that it was a mistake and that it was not on sale. I was so embarrasses at the way I was told to leave the shoe or pay the full price for it!!
I know that I could have made a scene about it and demanded that I get the shoe at the displayed price but I was in a rush and could not waste my time fighting over who's right or wrong!
Was it really my fault that they made an error? Should the customer be embarrassed at your staff's negligence?
I am at a loss for words that such a reputable company does not train their staff well enough!
