Makro centurion refusal to refund

I bought a Russel Hobbs coffee maker from Makro Centurion three week s ago. It stopped working on 10 September 2013. My wife took it back and I insisted on a refund as provided for in the consumer prtection act. However, the Makro staff refused to refund as they said the original packaging was thrown away. They insisted to give her another one which they removed from the box. I told them by phone that I do not wannt the product and want the broken one back so that I can escalate the case for a refund. They howver refused and insisted that my wife takes the new one they removed from the box. Apart from going tothe media and the consumer council, what is my recourse.
