Proof of device working identify car location

For clients who are using the dormat retreive device, how do you really know that the unit is working without any one just saying its working... i mean proof like some one telling you that your vehicle is at this location.. the fear being should a car be and only then you discover the device is faulty... i am really concerned... other tracking companies do tell clients of car location as proof that its working...
