Who protects the consumer?

Recreation & Entertainment

I recently rented a DVD from the above mentioned store. I returned it as one would when the time came only to receive a rude accusing and threatening SMS TWO days after i had returned it stating that i had damaged the DVD and DEMANDING that i replace it or else! Except I did not drop or handle the dvd in any manner to be able to damage it.

I went into the store to have a look at what i have been accused of. The dvd had definitely been dropped. (might i add the girl that showed me the dvd then dropped it AGAIN, ill probably be blamed for that as well.) The day i took out the dvd the girl behind the counter never inspected the dvd for damages, only glancing at it to see if its the one i want.
I contacted the owner and the more i tried to prove my innocence, the more i got bombarded with threats of legal fees and being handed over to Creditworx. So with the advise of my good friend whom is a lawyer and against my innocence, i will now have to replace that damned dvd in order to maintain a clean name.

Who protects the consumer? These people can just blame a broken dvd on whom ever they like and there is not a single thing you can do about it! Needless to say I cancelled my contract
