Notified of electricity amount after 5 months

Hi!
I rented a flat with Just Letting agency in Polokwane and i have been staying there for the past year and i never encountered any problems until yesterday when i received an sms from them saying that i owe R3855.00. i thought it was a joke because they deduct their monthly rent and electricity every month so i thought, when i went to their offices i spoke to this lady who handles account her name is Tracy and she told me that indeed i was owing that amount. From what she told me is that they no longer deduct money for electricity anymore from my account i have to pay it manually they only deduct rent amount. My problem is why did they not tell me all along and waited for the amount to be high? i did not receive any communication from them what so ever until yesterday when i got an sms. i tried to speak to the manager there hoping that he will get my side of the story but to no joy, he did not even want to hear my side what he said was that i have to pay the amount 'cause i used it. I found out that the lady was tried to send me an email and used a minus (-) instead of underscore_. Why did she wait to contact me on sms if she could get hold of me on my email? Please assist.
