Electricity cut, damage to appliances

Sir or Madam
On the 7th of October 2013 there was a storm and electric cut in our vicinity, we switched off all plug sockets because we knew when the electricity comes back, the flow damage the appliances as we are faced with similar incident in the past, Little did we know that already the damage has occurred, and now am sitting with a Broken TV and a washing machine due to that cut.. And the last time it happened I had to fix a sound system due similar problem, someone please advise..
