I paid a deposit and a rent for the month and like to get my mon

Good day, I went AJO accommodations to look for a flat to rent, while I was viewing I asked for the contract and payment details. I was given the payment details and I was told that the contract is flexible and I can move out as long as I give them a month notice. I paid and signed the contract which they told me that I'm already in the contract since I have paid the money into their account. I signed the contract. Later that day I went back to them and requested to cancel the contract, I was told that they will send me a letter to prove that I cancelled but no money back. I'm still waiting for the letter. Do these pleople play by the rules or is it because I do not have a lawyer? Please help me get my money back if possible. Thank you.
