Food delivered late after numerous calls

My food delivery was late. I phoned the driver 6 times but he did not answer. I phoned Doorstep Chef to enquire and was told that as soon as the drivers collect the food from the kitchen it is out of their hands!! I tried the driver again and he answered and informed me he had a break-down and it will be another 35 minutes before he can deliver my food. I phoned Doorstep Chef again to inform them of the driver's car breakdown. They were not aware of the situation. I cancelled my order and asked for a refund because I was not prepared to accept food that was in the sun in a broken down car for who knows how long. The food is not packed in cooler bags, it comes delivered in foil packaging in normal shopping bags. My question is how can a supplier transfer responsibility for delivery to a driver, and how can they not know when their drivers have car problems? Surely there must be contact between them and the drivers? Surely they are responsible for their products until it reaches my doorstep? I would have thought the driver will inform them of the delay and they will in return inform clients and send a backup driver to complete the round? I find this service unacceptable.
